# Corded Ware Culture (-2900)

From around 2900 BCE the Corded Ware culture spread across northern and central Europe, named for pottery decorated with cord impressions. Genetic studies link it to a large migration of people with steppe ancestry from the east. These newcomers are widely associated with the spread of Indo-European languages, from which Germanic tongues later developed.

## Why it matters
It laid the population and linguistic foundations of later Germanic peoples.
