# Talheim Death Pit (-5000)

A mass grave at Talheim contains the remains of 34 men, women and children killed around 5000 BCE, most by blows from stone axes to the head. It is one of the earliest known sites of organised violence in Europe. The grave suggests conflict between farming communities over land and resources at the end of the Linear Pottery period.

## Why it matters
It is key evidence that warfare accompanied the spread of settled agriculture.
