# Caesar Defeats Ariovistus (-58)

In 58 BCE Julius Caesar defeated the Suebic king Ariovistus, who had settled Germanic warriors in Gaul west of the Rhine. The battle drove the Suebi back across the river. In his Commentaries Caesar presented the Rhine as a boundary between Gauls and Germani, shaping the idea of Germania for centuries.

## Why it matters
Caesar's framing of the Rhine as a frontier defined Roman policy toward Germania.
