# Celtic Heuneburg (-600)

The Heuneburg on the upper Danube was one of the earliest urban-scale settlements north of the Alps, flourishing around 600 BCE. Its mudbrick wall, unique in Central Europe, showed contact with the Mediterranean world. Rich princely graves nearby reveal a Celtic elite trading with Greek colonies.

Celtic peoples dominated southern Germany long before the Germanic expansion.
