# Upper Germanic-Raetian Limes (100)

From the late first century Rome built the Limes, a fortified frontier of watchtowers, forts, palisades and walls running some 550 kilometres from the Rhine to the Danube. It controlled trade and movement between the empire and free Germania. It is now part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Frontiers of the Roman Empire.

## Why it matters
It was the largest archaeological monument in Europe and a dividing line of cultures.
