# Congress of Gniezno (1000)

In March 1000 Emperor Otto III made a pilgrimage to Gniezno and met Duke Bolesław I of Poland. He established an independent Polish archbishopric and honoured Bolesław as a partner in his vision of a renewed Christian empire. The event shaped Polish-German relations.

It recognised Poland as a sovereign Christian realm alongside the empire.
