# Synod of Sutri (1046)

In 1046 Henry III deposed three rival popes at the Synod of Sutri and installed a German reform pope. The emperor stood at the height of his authority over the Church. Ironically, the reform movement he supported would soon challenge imperial power.

It marked the high point of imperial control over the papacy.
