# Founding of Munich (1158)

In 1158 Henry the Lion, Duke of Saxony and Bavaria, destroyed a bishop's bridge and built a new one across the Isar at a settlement of monks. The Augsburg Arbitration of 14 June 1158 is the first documentary mention of Munich. The town grew wealthy on the salt trade.

## Why it matters
It was the origin of Bavaria's capital and Germany's third-largest city.
