# Founding of the Teutonic Order (1190)

During the siege of Acre in 1190, merchants from Bremen and Lübeck set up a field hospital for German crusaders. It became a military order in 1198, the Order of Brothers of the German House of Saint Mary in Jerusalem. The Teutonic Order later shifted its activities to the Baltic.

It became one of the most powerful forces in medieval Northern Europe.
