# Richard the Lionheart Captured (1192)

Returning from the Third Crusade in December 1192, Richard I of England was seized by Duke Leopold V of Austria and handed to Emperor Henry VI. He was released in 1194 after England paid an enormous ransom. The money financed Henry's conquest of Sicily.

## Why it matters
It enriched the Staufer and gave them the Kingdom of Sicily.
