# The Nibelungenlied (1200)

Around 1200 an anonymous poet in the Danube region composed the Nibelungenlied. It tells of Siegfried, Kriemhild and the destruction of the Burgundians at Attila's court. It is the most famous heroic epic in German.

## Why it matters
It became a national epic and inspired Wagner's Ring cycle.
