# Battle on the Ice (1242)

On 5 April 1242 Prince Alexander Nevsky of Novgorod defeated the knights of the Livonian Order on frozen Lake Peipus. The battle halted the Order's advance into Rus. It later became a Russian national legend.

## Why it matters
It fixed the eastern boundary of Catholic Livonia.
