# Founding of Königsberg (1255)

In 1255 the Teutonic Order founded Königsberg Castle, named in honour of King Ottokar II of Bohemia who joined the crusade. The town became the capital of Prussia. It is now Kaliningrad in Russia.

## Why it matters
Königsberg became the political and cultural centre of Prussia for seven centuries.
