# Golden Bull of 1356 (1356)

Issued by Charles IV in 1356, the Golden Bull fixed the rules for electing the king by seven prince-electors: the archbishops of Mainz, Trier and Cologne, the King of Bohemia, the Count Palatine, the Duke of Saxony and the Margrave of Brandenburg. Frankfurt was named the place of election. It remained in force until 1806.

## Why it matters
It was the fundamental constitutional law of the Holy Roman Empire.
