# Maximilian I (1493)

Maximilian I became sole ruler on his father's death in 1493 and in 1508 took the title of Elected Roman Emperor without papal coronation. Through marriages he gained Burgundy and prepared Habsburg succession in Spain, Bohemia and Hungary. He was called 'the last knight'.
