# Charles V Elected Emperor (1519)

In June 1519 Charles of Habsburg, already King of Spain, was elected emperor with the help of Fugger loans. He ruled Spain, the Netherlands, Austria, Italy and the Americas. He sought to preserve religious unity in a fractured empire.

## Why it matters
His vast empire was the high point of Habsburg power.
