# Diet of Worms (1521)

In April 1521 Martin Luther appeared before Charles V at the Diet of Worms and refused to retract his writings. The Edict of Worms declared him an outlaw. Elector Frederick the Wise hid him at Wartburg Castle, where he translated the New Testament into German.

## Why it matters
Luther's stand made the Reformation irreversible.
