# Marcomannic Wars (166)

From 166 to 180 CE the Marcomanni, Quadi and other Germanic peoples crossed the Danube and even reached northern Italy. Emperor Marcus Aurelius spent much of his reign fighting them, writing his Meditations in camp. The wars foreshadowed the great migrations of later centuries.

## Why it matters
They revealed the growing pressure of Germanic peoples on the Roman frontier.
