# Beethoven's Ninth Symphony (1824)

On 7 May 1824 Ludwig van Beethoven's Ninth Symphony premiered in Vienna. Its final movement sets Schiller's Ode to Joy. The composer, born in Bonn, was by then almost completely deaf.

## Why it matters
Its melody is today the anthem of the European Union.
