# Hambach Festival (1832)

In May 1832 some 30,000 people gathered at Hambach Castle to demand national unity, freedom and popular sovereignty. They carried black-red-gold flags. It was the largest political gathering of the Vormärz.

## Why it matters
It is regarded as the birthplace of German democracy and its colours.
