# Song of Germany (1841)

In August 1841 August Heinrich Hoffmann von Fallersleben wrote the Lied der Deutschen on Heligoland to a melody by Joseph Haydn. It expressed the longing for national unity. Its third stanza is Germany's national anthem today.
