# Herero and Nama Genocide (1904)

In 1904 the Herero and Nama rose against German colonial rule. General Lothar von Trotha issued an extermination order; tens of thousands died in the desert and in concentration camps. Germany officially acknowledged it as a genocide in 2021.

## Why it matters
It is considered the first genocide of the 20th century.
