# Spartacist Uprising (1919)

In January 1919 communists attempted an uprising in Berlin. Government-backed Freikorps crushed it, and on 15 January Rosa Luxemburg and Karl Liebknecht were murdered. The split of the left lasted throughout the Weimar Republic.

It deeply divided the German workers' movement.
