# Berlin Blockade and Airlift (1948)

After the currency reform introducing the Deutsche Mark in June 1948, the Soviets blockaded West Berlin. The Allies supplied the city by air for eleven months. The blockade ended in May 1949.

## Why it matters
It made West Berlin a symbol of freedom.
