# Rise of the Alemanni (213)

In 213 CE the Alemanni ('all men') are first recorded when Emperor Caracalla campaigned against them. This confederation of Suebic groups repeatedly raided Roman territory. Around 260 they overran the Limes and settled the Agri Decumates, the origin of the Swabian region.

## Why it matters
The Alemanni gave their name to Germany in French and Spanish ('Allemagne', 'Alemania').
