# Fall of the Burgundians (436)

In 436 a Roman general Aetius, using Hunnic mercenaries, destroyed the Burgundian kingdom centred on Worms, reportedly killing thousands including King Gundahar. The survivors were resettled in Savoy. The catastrophe became the historical core of the Nibelungen legend.

## Why it matters
It inspired the greatest German heroic epic, the Nibelungenlied.
