# Battle of the Catalaunian Plains (451)

In 451 Attila the Hun invaded Gaul with an army including Ostrogoths, Gepids and other Germanic subjects. A Roman-Visigothic coalition under Aetius fought him to a standstill on the Catalaunian Plains. Germanic peoples fought on both sides of one of antiquity's largest battles.

## Why it matters
It checked the Hunnic empire's expansion into Western Europe.
