# Clovis Becomes King of the Franks (481)

In 481 Clovis succeeded his father as king of the Salian Franks. Within three decades he united the Frankish groups and conquered most of Gaul. His Merovingian dynasty ruled the Franks until 751.

## Why it matters
The Frankish kingdom became the parent state of both France and Germany.
