# Battle of Tolbiac (496)

Around 496 Clovis defeated the Alemanni at Tolbiac, near modern Zülpich. According to Gregory of Tours, he vowed to become Christian if he won, and was later baptised as a Catholic at Reims. Catholic conversion won him the support of Gaul's Roman population and the Church.

## Why it matters
It brought southwestern Germany under Frankish rule and tied the Franks to Rome.
