In 50 CE Emperor Claudius raised the Ubian settlement on the Rhine to the status of a Roman colony, at the request of his wife Agrippina, who was born there. Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium became the capital of the province of Germania Inferior. It is the origin of modern Cologne.

## Why it matters
Cologne became one of the most important cities of Roman and medieval Germany.
