# Duchy of Bavaria (555)

By the mid-sixth century the Bavarii had emerged in the former Roman province of Raetia and Noricum under dukes of the Agilolfing family. Garibald I, recorded around 555, is the first known duke. Bavaria remained a semi-independent duchy under Frankish overlordship.

## Why it matters
Bavaria is one of Europe's oldest continuously existing territorial units.
