# Pepin the Short Crowned (751)

In 751, with papal approval, the mayor of the palace Pepin the Short deposed the last Merovingian king and was crowned king of the Franks. The alliance between the Carolingians and the papacy became a cornerstone of medieval politics. Pepin later gave conquered Italian lands to the Pope.
