# Charlemagne Becomes King (768)

On Pepin's death in 768 his sons Charles and Carloman inherited the kingdom; after Carloman's death in 771 Charles ruled alone. Known as Charlemagne, he expanded Frankish rule across much of Western and Central Europe. His court at Aachen became the centre of his realm.

Charlemagne is regarded as a father of Europe and of the German and French nations.
