# Oaths of Strasbourg (842)

In 842 Louis the German and Charles the Bald swore an alliance against their brother Lothair at Strasbourg. Each swore in the language of the other's army, one in an early Romance tongue and one in Old High German. The texts are among the earliest records of both languages.

## Why it matters
They reveal the linguistic split between the future Germany and France.
