# Treaty of Verdun (843)

In August 843 Charlemagne's grandsons divided the empire into three kingdoms. Louis the German received East Francia, the lands east of the Rhine, while Charles the Bald took West Francia and Lothair the Middle Kingdom. East Francia became the core of the later German kingdom.

## Why it matters
It is widely considered the birth certificate of Germany as a separate realm.
