# Conrad I Elected King (911)

When the last East Frankish Carolingian, Louis the Child, died in 911, the dukes elected Conrad of Franconia as king rather than turn to the West Frankish Carolingians. Conrad struggled against the powerful dukes of Saxony, Bavaria and Swabia. The election marked a step toward a separate German kingdom.

It is often seen as the moment East Francia became an independent German kingdom.
