# Otto I Crowned at Aachen (936)

In August 936 Otto, son of Henry the Fowler, was crowned king in Charlemagne's chapel at Aachen. He deliberately invoked Carolingian tradition. Otto suppressed ducal revolts and relied on bishops and abbots as pillars of royal power.

Otto built the Imperial Church system that underpinned German royal rule.
